Ethics

Ethical Or Not, That Is The Question?

Ethics are some one's murals, their ability to decide whether or not doing a certain thing is right or wrong. In my research, I found that the most common question asked about ethics in photography is, "Should the photographer had done something to help out these people in need or was he just doing his job & walked away?" To me, I think that the brutal nature of this very real situation makes people believe, it's just that simple to stop & just do in a time of need. Nobody actually knows what they would do if this was going on in front of them. Not to sound completely insensitive but this photographer was just doing his job. I mean I'm sure he helped after he got as much shots as possible so this is just one image, it tells us a story but it doesn't tell us the whole story. We can only assume what the story is by the information given to us in the form of this picture. The photographer could have just been there, in the right place at the wrong time. But to some things up, I think this is a great-powerful ethical shot.

Spot News & General News

SPOT NEWS PHOTOGRAPHY- is a current (in that time) important news event that you happen to catch on film or digital camera, that may be happening in that area.

GENERAL NEWS PHOTOGRAPHY- is just basic news that happens everyday. It can be anything from the score on a high schools last football game to President Obama winning the election.

Conclusion
There isn't really much of a difference between the two different types of photojournalism. I could hardly find out any information online about "Spot News", so this was kind of hard to do. To find the right picture & not have any knowledge on whether or not it is the right image. But I did learn that when you take a news type of photo, you either get general news or spot news because they are the major types you find in any newspaper or magazine.

Three Environmental PhotoJournalist

Tobby Jorrin (Photojournalistic Environmental Photographer)

1. TOBBY JORRIN

Tobby, focuses on carefully, creating an image based on the world around him. "He doesn't like fabricating a photo in the studio", he says. That is what he prides himself on. He started out as a staff photographer at the Albuquerque Tribune from 1996 to 2005. He has done alot of interning jobs from the Tribune, Gamma Press Images, Time Magazine & etc. He has a BA from Cornell University & did graduate work at UMSJ (University of Missouri School of Journalism). He's won several awards for his photography work in contests such as; the New Mexico Press Association & AP Managing Editors & also won several Pictures of the Year & Best of Photography awards. He has become much more successful as a freelance photo journalism, doing work for companies such as; New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, USA Chronicle, & etc.

I picked him & that picture because of the style of it. The composition & space in which the photo is set up, is really great. This picture is about the Alberquerque Mayor, Martin Chavez (right) & Attorney Dinelli. There on a block of the city where they succeed in getting substandard aparments razed.

2. SCOTT HOLSTEIN
Scott Holstien is a freelance photojournalist. He lives in Tallahassee, Florida. He specializes in environmental portraits, lifestyle, sports action, news, and other commercial & editorial photography. He is pretty good in location lighting & works pretty much exclusively on location. He has his BA in Photojournalism from Gardner- Weeb University & was the first assistant for world-reknowned photographer Joe McNally. Some of his work appeared in; Barron's, Charlotte Observer, Chronicle of Higher Education, Delta Sky and etc.

I picked him because his style has some suttle differences. Also, his work stood out to me becuase ofmost of the high contrast in his photos. I think it really sets off a good balance in terms of saturation & vibrance.

3. AUDRA NAPOLITANO

She's a freelance photographer, Graphic Designer and Production Assistant for Hersam Acorn Newspapers. She's a publisher of 19 local, weekly newspapers. She lives in Milford, Connecticut.
Her clients are: American Cancer Society and Historic Hudson Valley. Audra has shot album covers for The Christina Abbott Band and Bob Ricci Band. Her photographs were featured on The Eels website. She has assisted with Dreamscape Studio Photography. Before Audara's work at Hersam Acorn, she was a specialty camera sales associate and photographic lab printer at Milford Camera Shop.
She has a degree in Art History from SCSU (Southern Connecticut State University). Her passion for photography started at the age of twelve, after going to her first concert. She brings this passion to every event she has the opportunity to cover.
Audra see's the world, as images she's taken and pictures she wants to take. She is always touched when someone asks her to capture a moment in their life. She is an environmental photographer; She allows people to be themselves in their natural settings. Audra photojournalistic style helps her tell your story. She wants your individuality to shine through.

I picked her becuase Audra is different. She isn't 100% "out-there" (for lack of a better word) but she is up and coming & I can relate to that from my point of veiw. I'm just starting out to so I can tell she is really putting alot of effort into the pictures that she takes, wether it be the composition, vibrance, contrast or etc.

He's Waiting

Photographer Calvin Ferguson

Camero Crumby & Crystal Carson, both in their 20's are waiting to have sex before marriage.

THEIR STORY

Camero noticed Crystal long before she noticed him. They met at Central Piedmont Community College, in 2010. Crystal was walking with a group of friends across the student life office, when Camero looked up and saw her. His first thought was "I have to know her name". So he asked the student adviser & he gave Camero more than just a name, he told him that Crystal was running for student body president. Obviously, she got Camero's vote.

Spring Fest, was the day after. Camero showed up, knowing that Crystal was going to be there, he was so determined to talk to her & get her number. So he showed up at Crystal's booth, but instead of getting her number, Camero walked away with a flyer & her email on the back of it.

Now that he had her email, he engaged in a little bit of cyber stalking. He added her facebook & any other social network he could find her on. He started to show up with his friends, where ever Crystal & her friends were. One day he showed up to a night club looking for Crystal. Needless to say he found her, talking to another guy, Camero confidently walked up & interrupted the conversation.

The next day was the 5k run at school. Camero found out the Crystal was running, so he signed up & ran as well. He finished the race before she did & was waiting for her to cross the finish line with a gatorade bottle in hand. He finally got her number & asked her out on a date the next day.

After that they were pretty much inseparable.

E.J Bellocq

HIS LIFE

E.J. was born in New Orleans on August 19, 1873. His parents were Paul & Marie Bellocq. His grandfathers on both sides migrated from France & that's how he got the last name, Bellocq. He was brought up in Catholic Churches, so much so that his younger brother was Leon grew up to be a Jesuit Priest. He died in the year 1940, leaving behind his most famous work, "Storyville Portraits."

HIS CAREER

E.J. started out his career as a commercial photographer, making his living from 1895 to the 1940's. He also worked as a company photographer in 1918 for a little while, until he grew bored of it. Then he started on a new project. He took pictures of prostitutes in the New Orleans "Red Light District". In some of the pictures the prostitutes faces were scratched out. Nobody knows for sure why the faces are scratched out but they're are some speculations that; 1. He did it because he became inflamed with anger at some of the women he took pictures of & that was he retaliation. 2. He did it to protect the identity of the prostitute because she may have been ashamed or she didn't want her family to find out. Those are just two of many speculations.

His work entitled "Storyville Portraits" was recovered by photographer Lee Friedlander. Lee took E.J.'swork, learned his process & made 89 more prints. A selected group of those prints were put on the Museum of Modern Art in NY. As a result, an expanded addition, "Bellocq: Photographs form Storyville", got published after E.J.'s death in 1996.

WHY I PICKED HIM

I picked him because I liked the simplicity of these photos. I like the old look & "grungyness", for lack of a better word, of them. The scratched out faces are a little scary but they do leave a sense of wonder & imagination.

What PhotoJournalism Means To Me/Intro

My Name is Jeni Jacobs. I was born in the U.S. Virgin Islands & I've lived there my whole life until June 16th of last year (2011). I came here, Charlotte, NC, so I could attend an art school, also I'm  close to the family I have here. There are no Art Schools back home. :( .... Anyways, I'm an Photography Major because I've always had a little passion for it, in me. Right now, I am in my 4th quarter of attending, The Art Institute of Charlotte.

This blog has been created for one of class's called photojournalism.

What does photojournalism mean to me ??

To be honest, it doesn't really mean anything to me because I don't know what it is about or how to go about doing it. I don't know the "day to day" of a regular photojournalist but I'm sure I will find out. That's why I'm here at this school to find out these things I didn't know before. Sorry, if this wasn't the exact answer you were looking for but it is what it is, which is the truth.
